Mrk 820 (2012)

Mrk 820. One of many Markarian galaxies. There are hundreds and hundreds of them but this is just one that Hubble caught. Also, an interesting and nearly perfectly shaped barred, circular galaxy is on the left. It seems something like a strongly barred spiral galaxy where the arms have connected start to end to form a continuous circle.

I only see 3 local stars in this image. The rest of the smears and specks are all galaxies, far, far away. The Universe is unfathomably immense.

Hubble data is public domain, but I put a lot of work into combining it into beautiful color images. The minimal credit line should read: NASA / ESA / J. Schmidt
